Bhai Dooj 2025: Festival's Divine Connection with Yamraj and Yamuna, know how this tradition started

Bhai Dooj 2025: On October 23rd, Bhai Dooj, the festival of unbreakable love between brother and sister, will be celebrated. The holy festival of Bhai Dooj is celebrated every year on the second day of the Shukla Paksha of the Kartik month. This festival holds special significance in Hinduism.

According to scriptures, on this auspicious occasion, after bathing and meditating, sisters worship Lord Yama, tie a sacred thread on their brother's wrist and apply a tilak on his forehead. It is believed that a story should be recited during this time. It is believed that reciting the story brings sweetness to the relationship between brother and sister and bestows the blessing of long life on the brother.

Yamraj was very fond of his sister Yamuna

According to mythology, Suryadev had a son, Yamraj, and a daughter, Yamuna. Yamraj was very fond of his sister, Yamuna. Yamuna repeatedly asked her brother to come home. But due to his heavy workload, he was unable to visit her on time.

Yamraj felt hesitant to visit Yamuna

Once, Yamuna promised Yamraj that he would visit her home on the second day of the bright fortnight of Kartik month. However, Yamraj felt a little hesitant to visit Yamuna, wondering who would invite him to their home because he was known for taking people's lives.

Yamraj asked Yamuna to ask for a boon

But he still went to Yamuna's home. When Yamraj arrived at his sister's house, she was thrilled to see him and welcomed him warmly. Yamuna prepared a variety of dishes for her brother. Yamraj was pleased with her hospitality and told Yamuna to ask for a boon.

Yamraj agreed to Yamuna's request

Yamuna then requested a promise from him that he would come to her home and eat every year on the second day of the bright fortnight of the Kartik month. Yamraj agreed, saying "Tathastu," and also gave her various gifts. According to legend, this is how the tradition of celebrating Bhai Dooj began.
