PM Modi condoles passing of veteran actor Asrani; fans and film industry left in shock


Veteran actor and comedian Govardhan Asrani, fondly known as Asrani, passed away on Monday, October 20, at the age of 84. He had been in the hospital for nearly five days because of health problems. He passed away at Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu, Mumbai, where doctors said that fluid had built up in his lungs, making his condition worse.

The news of his death on Diwali night shocked fans and the film industry. Many people from all over India shared their tributes, including political leaders and actors who remembered his great work. 

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, condoled the passing away of veteran actor Govardhan Asrani. In his message, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the legendary artist, recalling his immense contribution to Indian cinema and his ability to bring joy to generations of audiences.

In a post on X, Modi said:

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Govardhan Asrani Ji. A gifted entertainer and a truly versatile artist, he entertained audiences across generations. He particularly added joy and laughter to countless lives through his unforgettable performances. His contribution to Indian cinema will always be cherished. My condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Asrani’s funeral took place the same evening at the Santacruz Crematorium, with only close family members present. His family later explained that this was what he wanted. He had told his wife, Manju Asrani, that he did not want any public event or media attention after he passed away. His personal assistant, Babubhai, said, “Asrani sahab was admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu four days ago. The doctors told us there was fluid in his lungs. He pssed away today, October 20, around 3:30 pm. The last rites have already been completed.”
