Avalanche strikes Yalung Ri peak in northeastern Nepal: 7 die, four missing
Seven people were killed and four others injured on Monday when an avalanche struck the Yalung Ri peak in northeastern Nepal. Another four people are missing.
The accident occurred when an avalanche hit the base camp of the 5,630-meter-high peak. Four people are missing after the accident.

Team of 15 people was heading towards Gaurishankar and Yalung Ri
According to the Nepali website Himalayan Times, the accident occurred around 9 a.m. A team of 15 people was heading towards Gaurishankar and Yalung Ri when the avalanche struck them near the base camp.
Local ward chairman Ninggeli Sherpa stated that the administration had been alerted to the situation since early morning, but the rescue operation began late. He added that due to the Rolwaling area being a restricted area, helicopters were delayed as they obtained flight permission, further slowing the rescue operation.
According to police, the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force have been deployed in the search and rescue operation. A helicopter was also dispatched, but it was unable to reach the accident site due to bad weather.
Special Permit Required for Trekking in Yalung Ri
Yalung Ri is close to the Nepal-China border. This area is considered a less crowded and technically challenging trekking zone. Foreign travelers need a special permit to trek in this area.
Yalung Ri is an avalanche-prone area, meaning avalanches have occurred here in the past. In 2019, a team of French climbers was stranded in this area, and several climbers were killed on this route after the 2015 earthquake.
Yalung Ri is close to the Nepal-China border. Traveling there was previously prohibited for religious reasons. Traveling there has been permitted since 2000, requiring a special permit.
