Chhattisgarh: At least 6 die as passenger train collides with goods train near Bilaspur
At least six people were killed and about 15 injured in a train accident in Bilaspur district, Chhattisgarh, on Tuesday.
The accident occurred between Bilaspur and Gautara railway stations when a Korba passenger train collided with a freight train already parked on the same track.
According to District Collector Sanjay Agarwal, "Four people have been reported dead so far. Additionally, two people are trapped inside the train and are being rescued. The condition of one injured is critical."
Railway officials stated that the accident occurred around 4 p.m. when the Korba passenger train collided with a freight train. Railway and district administration teams arrived at the scene upon receiving information. Relief and rescue operations are underway.
The loco pilot was reportedly trapped in the train debris and has been rescued safely.
Rescue workers have already rescued several passengers, while the seriously injured are receiving first aid at the scene.
Some of the injured have been admitted to various hospitals in Bilaspur.
The passenger train's carriage is being cut with a gas cutter. It is being reported that women and children are trapped in this carriage and will be rescued. The death toll may rise.
Compensation announced
The railway administration immediately dispatched medical units and divisional officers to the scene. Currently, train operations on the entire route have been halted. Several express and passenger trains have been cancelled or diverted. The railway has announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 5 lakh for the injured.
Following the incident, several express and passenger trains on the Kolkata-Mumbai route have been cancelled or diverted.
The accident also caused extensive damage to overhead wiring and signaling systems, which may take time to repair. Technical teams are working on track clearance and restoration.
