Ford Investment in India: Ford Motor Company has announced plans to re-establish its manufacturing operations in India. The company plans to invest Rs 3,250 crore to produce new-generation engines at its Maraimalai Nagar plant in the Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu. With this decision, Ford is returning to Indian production after three years.

A major boost for Tamil Nadu's automotive industry

Ford's Maraimalai Nagar plant will be operational by 2029 and will have an annual production capacity of 2,35,000 engines. According to the company, this project will provide direct employment to over 600 people and create numerous indirect jobs. This move not only marks Ford's return to India but is also considered a major boost for Tamil Nadu's automotive industry.

Chennai unit to be reactivated

In 2022, Ford sold its Sanand plant in Gujarat to Tata Motors, but retained the engine production plant. The company had also planned to sell the Chennai plant later, but has now decided to reactivate the same unit. Since entering India in 1995, Ford invested over $2 billion and launched popular vehicles like the EcoSport and Figo.

India to become hub of Ford's Asian operations

According to Ford, this new production plan will support the existing engine factory in Sanand, which already produces engines for export. Jeff Marentick, president of Ford's International Markets Group, said, "We are excited about the role of the Chennai plant and thank the Tamil Nadu government for their continued support. This decision reiterates our confidence in India's strong manufacturing capabilities." This investment once again positions India as a key hub for Ford's Asian operations.

Media and Entertainment sector lower downs 24% in 2020 despite last-quarter rebound

  India's media and entertainment (M&E) sector lower downed 24% to Rs1.38 trillion in 2020 due to the corona-virus pandemic. The contractions came despite a rebound in the last-quarter. The M&E sector is supposed to expand 25% to Rs1.73 trillion in 2021 and compound annual growth rate of 13.7% to Rs2.23 trillion by 2023, according to a joint report by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry(Ficci) and EY, finance consulting firm.  While advertisement revenues dropped 25% to 19,900 crore and subscriptions fell 20% to 15,400 crores. Digital advertisement remained unchanged, but print (Rs 8,400 crore) and television (Rs 6,900 crore) advertising saw the steepest declines. The only segments that rose in 2020 were digital and online gaming, which added a total of Rs 2,600 crore and their contribution to the M&E sector rose from 16% in 2019 to 23% in 2020.
