UNESCO grants Lucknow this status; PM Modi expresses delight

UNESCO on Friday declared Lucknow a "Creative City of Gastronomy." With this, Lucknow has now been included in UNESCO's list of 70 cities known as "Creative Cities of Gastronomy."

Up until recently, India had only one city on that coveted list, Hyderabad, but in June this year, India nominated Lucknow to claim the title for its delicious, storied Awadhi cuisine. And, on World Cities Day, Lucknow received the title.

The United Nations wrote on the social media platform X, "From mouth-watering Galouti kebabs to Awadhi biryani, delicious chaat, golgappas, and butter malai, Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh is a paradise for food lovers, rich in centuries-old traditions."

Lucknow is well-known for its Hazratganj market and Chowk area, where you can find a rich mix of street food and royal dishes. This food tradition has been passed down through generations of royal chefs.

Many people visit Lucknow for its food, making culinary tourism a major attraction. In 2024, the city welcomed over 82 lakh tourists, according to Amrit Abhijat, the Principal Secretary of Tourism & Culture.

PM Modi expresses delight

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed delight at Lucknow being declared a Creative City of Gastronomy by UNESCO.

PM Modi said that the city of Lucknow is synonymous with a vibrant culture, with a rich culinary tradition at its core. He said that receiving recognition from UNESCO highlights this unique aspect of the city. He called upon people from around the world to visit Lucknow and experience its uniqueness.

Responding to a post by Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat regarding this development, PM Modi wrote on X;

Lucknow is synonymous with a vibrant culture, at the core of which is a great culinary culture. I am glad that UNESCO has recognized this aspect of Lucknow and I call upon people from around the world to visit Lucknow and discover its uniqueness.
