Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has said that the Modi government has abolished MNREGA and enacted a new law to suppress and crush the poor, and the Congress will launch a large-scale nationwide movement against it from January 5.

Speaking at a press conference at the party headquarters here on Saturday after the meeting of the Congress Working Committee, the party's highest policy-making body, Kharge said that the party will launch a major movement across the country for the restoration of MNREGA. Extensive discussions were held on this issue in the Working Committee meeting, where it was described as an insult to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, and a decision against the poor.

Kharge said the committee unanimously decided to launch a nationwide movement against MNREGA from January 5. He said that a pledge was taken in the meeting that there would be a widespread movement across the country regarding MNREGA and the party would continue to fight for the withdrawal of this law.

NITI Aayog and CAG reports have hailed MNREGA: Kharge

He said that all reports, including those of the NITI Aayog and the CAG, have praised MNREGA and described it as a major scheme for the benefit of the poor. He said that even during the COVID-19 pandemic, this scheme played a major role in providing employment in rural areas and provided employment to people. This also stopped migration from rural areas and gave the poor the right to work in their villages.

Modi govt has snatched away the rights of the poor

Kharge said that MNREGA has been useful for everyone. It provided employment to everyone, stopped migration, and gave the right to work to the poor on a large scale. The poor were benefiting from it, and those who were not getting wages were getting employment under MNREGA, but the Modi government has snatched away the rights of the poor. The people who were dependent on this are angry, and this anger will prove costly for the Modi government, and they will have to bring back MNREGA.
