Delhi's air quality in 'severe' category, AQI close to 500 in many areas; what measures govt. is taking

The capital Delhi was shrouded in a thick blanket of smog on Sunday morning.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at around 500 in many places.

An AQI between 401 and 500 is considered in the 'severe' category. In Anand Vihar, the AQI was recorded at 491.

Following the severe air quality in Delhi-NCR on Saturday, GRAP-4 (Graded Response Action Plan) has been implemented.

What is GRAP Stage-4?

Entry of all trucks into Delhi is banned (except for trucks carrying essential goods). However, LNG, CNG, electric, and BS-6 diesel vehicles are allowed to enter Delhi.

BS-4 diesel-powered medium goods vehicles and heavy goods vehicles are allowed to enter Delhi for a limited time, excluding those carrying essential goods.

Entry of vehicles from outside Delhi with BS-3 and lower standards is banned.

All types of construction and repair work mentioned in GRAP Stage-3 are prohibited.

The state government may decide to close schools and conduct online classes for students of classes 6 to 9 and class 11.

Along with this, as per the provisions mentioned in GRAP-3, the state government may decide to close schools and conduct online classes for students up to class 5.
