US President Donald Trump has launched a scheme that will grant US visas to wealthy foreigners who pay at least $1 million.

Trump sees the new version as a way for the U.S. to attract and retain top talent, all while generating revenue for federal coffers. He has been promoting the gold card programme for months, and once suggested that each card would cost $5 million, though he more recently revised that to the $1 million and $2 million pricing scheme.

Trump wrote on Truth Social on Wednesday, "This card will give buyers a direct path to citizenship for all eligible and vetted individuals. Very exciting. Our great American companies will now be able to retain their invaluable talent."

The Trump Gold Card was announced earlier this year.

According to the official website, it is a US visa granted to those who can prove they will provide a "significant benefit" to the country.

This comes at a time when Washington is increasing its immigration crackdown, including raising work visa fees and deporting undocumented immigrants.

The Gold Card scheme promises to grant US citizenship in "record time" and requires a fee of $1 million.

Businesses sponsoring employees will also have to pay additional fees, along with $2 million.

The website said there is also a "Platinum" version of the card, which offers special tax breaks and will soon be available for $5 million.

The Gold Card scheme has faced criticism since its initial announcement in February, with some Democrats saying it will unfairly benefit the wealthy.
