US-India trade deal: What Trump's trade official amid deal negotiations?
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has said that the US has received the best trade deal proposal from India so far.
Jamison Greer appeared before a US Senate committee on Wednesday and made this statement in response to a question about the trade agreement with India.
He said, “My team is in New Delhi right now, as we speak. There are protests in India regarding some raw crops and other products. As you said, negotiating a trade deal with them is indeed a difficult task. I agree with that 100 percent, but they are coming forward quite a bit… The proposals they are discussing with us are the best proposals our country has ever received. I think (India) is a viable alternative market.”
An American negotiating team led by a senior official of the US Trade Representative’s Office , Ambassador Rick Switzer, deputy USTR is in India for a face-to-face deliberation on the proposed first-phase of India-US bilateral trade agreement (BTA).
On the first day of the talks, India's Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal met with US Deputy Trade Representative Rick Switzer.
The Commerce Department said in a social media post, "Both sides discussed matters related to India-US trade and economic relations, including ongoing negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement for mutual benefit."
Several rounds of trade talks have been held between India and the US, and this is very important because the Trump administration imposed a heavy 50 percent tariff on Indian goods in US markets.
