Black Turmeric Benefits: Turmeric (Haldi) is an important part of Indian cuisine, not only enhancing the flavor of food but also known for its medicinal properties. Black turmeric, on the other hand, is a very special and rare medicinal plant, not used as an everyday spice like common turmeric.

In Ayurveda and traditional medicine systems, it is known as a powerful herb.

It looks similar to regular turmeric, but when its rhizome (root) is cut, a blue-black layer is visible inside. This unique color and its pungent aroma distinguish it from other types of turmeric. In ancient times, it was carefully preserved and used only when necessary.

The spice is native to parts of India in states such as Odisha, West Bengal, Meghalaya, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh, among others. This is considered an endangered and rare spice because of which black turmeric holds exceptional value in traditional herbal medicine for its wide‐ranging uses.

Medicinal properties

According to Ayurveda, black turmeric possesses several medicinal properties. It has been used to treat pain, inflammation, asthma, respiratory problems, and joint pain. The natural anti-inflammatory compounds present in it are considered helpful in reducing inflammation in the body.

In rural areas, black turmeric was used as a home remedy. A paste of black turmeric was applied to boils, insect bites, injuries, or wounds. In many places, there was also a tradition of warming it slightly with mustard oil before applying it.

Ecological and cultural value

In addition to health benefits, black turmeric also brings ecological and cultural value which needs to be mentioned. Because it is an endangered spice, the cultivation and preservation support biodiversity. It is a prime source of income for small farmers.

Special place in Lakshmi Puja

Black turmeric is not limited to its medicinal properties; it also holds religious and spiritual significance. It has a special place in Lakshmi Puja (worship of the goddess Lakshmi). It is believed that black turmeric wards off negative energy and brings positivity into the home. For this reason, it was also kept as an amulet or a sacred object of worship.

Not easily available

Today, black turmeric is not easily available. It takes a longer time to cultivate, and the increasing use of modern medicines has led to a decline in the use of traditional herbs. However, people are now returning to natural and Ayurvedic remedies, and the importance of black turmeric is being recognized once again.
