A human-like shadow is visible behind Shiva lingam: Mystery of Telangana’s Chaya Someshwara Temple
Chaya Someshwara Temple in Telangana: India is home to many ancient temples that continue to amaze people with their mysteries and miracles. In some places, it is forbidden even to look at the temple after the doors are closed, while in others, it is believed that God himself appears as soon as the doors are shut.
Among these mysterious temples is the Chaya Someshwara Temple in Telangana, where a mysterious shadow resembling a human figure appears on the wall directly behind the idol of Lord Shiva. Whose shadow this is and how it is formed remains a mystery to this day.
Located in Panagal village of Nalgonda district in Telangana, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is in close proximity to Pachala Someshwara temple, another Shaivite shrine in Panagal.
Devotees come here not only to have darshan of Shiva Lingam but also to witness the amazing shadow that appears in the sanctum sanctorum. This mysterious shadow attracts not only devotees but also scientists and architectural experts. It is considered a living example of advanced architecture and scientific understanding belonging to an ancient time period (nearly 1000 years back).
Shadow never moves, nor does its shape change
A clear, human-like shadow is visible on the wall behind the Shivling installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Surprisingly, this shadow never moves, nor does its shape change. The biggest mystery is that there is no object in the sanctum sanctorum that could create this shadow. It is believed to be a remarkable architectural illusion created by the interplay of light and angles.
Human figure is formed by combined shadow of several pillars
According to scientists, due to the numerous pillars in front of the sanctum sanctorum, sunlight remains inside the temple throughout the day. This light reaches every part of the temple. Some experts believe that the human figure visible behind the Shivling is formed by the combined shadow of several pillars, although this has not yet been definitively confirmed.
Temple complex also houses idols of Lord Vishnu and Surya
The Chhaya Someshwara Temple was built in the 11th century by the Kunduru Choda rulers of the Ikshvaku dynasty. The temple complex also houses idols of Lord Vishnu and Surya (the Sun God) along with Lord Shiva. Its gopuram (gateway tower) is also very special, where the deities of the eight directions and Lord Shiva in the Nataraja pose are sculpted.
According to mythological tales, Lord Chandra (the Moon God) performed rigorous penance at this place to please Lord Shiva. Pleased with his penance, Lord Shiva himself appeared. It is believed that visiting this temple brings positive energy and mental peace. The Chhaya Someshwara Temple remains a symbol of the wonderful confluence of faith and science.
