Gujarat: After Indore tragedy, contaminated water hits Gandhinagar, pipeline leak sickens over 100 children
After Indore, now in Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat, more than 150 people, including over 100 children, have fallen ill in the last three days after drinking contaminated water. About half of the children have contracted typhoid. The situation became so serious that a new ward had to be opened at the civil hospital to accommodate the sick children.
10 leaks found in new pipeline laid at a cost of crores
Similar to Indore, sewage contamination was found in the drinking water pipeline here as well. People in Sector-24, 28, and Adiwada areas of the city are the most affected. When the administration inspected the water supply, 10 leaks were found. These leaks were in the new pipeline laid at a cost of crores of rupees under the Smart City project.
More than 80 teams deployed
Repair work on the leaks and chlorination of the water supply have also been carried out. To bring the situation under control, more than 80 teams of health workers, including female health workers and ASHA sisters, have been deployed. Health teams have so far examined more than 90,000 people.
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi held a meeting with the District Collector, Municipal Commissioner, health officials, and other administrative officers on Saturday. Following the meeting, he visited the Gandhinagar Civil Hospital.

Sanghavi stated that a special team of 22 doctors has been formed and senior officials have been given the responsibility of overseeing the situation.
Home Minister Amit Shah and Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi have also taken cognizance of the matter. Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke to the Collector over the phone and instructed him to work on a war footing.
