Iran Unrest 2026Amidst the ongoing protests in Iran and the increasing number of deaths in the government's crackdown, India on Wednesday advised its citizens in Iran to leave the country as soon as possible and issued helpline numbers to contact the embassy in Tehran. The government took this step citing the rapidly changing security situation amidst escalating regional tensions and widespread protests.

The advisory issued by the Indian Embassy in Tehran on Wednesday urged all Indian citizens, including students, pilgrims, businessmen, and tourists, to leave Iran by any available means of transport, including commercial flights.

This advisory follows a previous warning issued on January 5. The embassy said in a statement, "In view of the evolving situation in Iran, Indian nationals residing there are advised to leave Iran through available means of transport."

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also reiterated its advisory against travel to Iran, advising Indian citizens not to travel to Iran "until further notice."

The embassy has asked all Indian citizens and people of Indian origin to exercise caution, stay away from protests, and remain in contact with the Indian Embassy. They have been asked to keep all their documents ready during travel and can also seek assistance from the embassy in this regard.

The embassy has also issued helpline numbers for emergencies. People can contact the embassy on mobile numbers 989128109115, 989128109109, 989128109102 and 989932179359. The Indian Embassy can also be contacted at cons.tehran@mea.gov.in.

The embassy has advised all citizens to register with the embassy without delay. This development comes at a time when US President Donald Trump has said he could take "strong action." According to reports, more than 2,500 people have died during the ongoing anti-government protests in Iran.

The advisory was issued amidst growing internal unrest in Iran. According to human rights organizations and media reports, the death toll from the government crackdown on protesters has risen sharply in recent weeks, deepening concerns about security and stability. Indian officials said they are closely monitoring the situation.

India has periodically issued travel advisories for the region, but the latest warning reflects its heightened concern over the deteriorating security situation and the risks faced by foreign nationals.
