Maharashtra municipal corporation elections 2026: Mahayuti set for landslide win, PM Modi's first reaction to election results
The BJP alliance is headed for a landslide victory in the Maharashtra municipal corporation elections. Trends show the BJP alliance leading in 23 out of 29 municipal corporations.
In Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the BJP + Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) alliance is leading in 115 out of a total of 227 seats.
Mahayuti is also leading in Nagpur, Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Nashik. The Congress has won in Latur, securing 43 out of 70 seats.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his delight at the victory in the local body elections.
Posting on the social media platform X, PM Modi wrote, “Thank you Maharashtra! The energetic people of the state have blessed the NDA's pro-people good governance agenda!” He added that the results of the various municipal corporation elections show that the NDA's connection with the people of Maharashtra has become even stronger.
Thackeray brothers came together but without any benefit
Maharashtra municipal corporation elections saw different alliances compared to the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. The Thackeray and Pawar families came together after many years, but all these formulas seemed to fail against the BJP-Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) wave.
Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray had formed an alliance for the Mumbai BMC elections. They did not contest this time as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi. Consequently, the Congress and NCP also contested separately.
The BJP and Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) contested together. However, Ajit Pawar was not part of this alliance. Ajit Pawar fielded candidates in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad in alliance with his uncle Sharad Pawar's party.
In the Mumbai BMC, according to trends available for 207 out of 227 seats, the BJP alliance is leading in 115 seats. The alliance of Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena and Raj Thackeray's MNS is leading in 77 seats. This means that the Thackeray brothers came together after 20 years in the name of the Marathi people, but they did not get any electoral benefit from it.
