Water samples tested at hundreds of places in Bhopal; sewage and water lines located close in many areas
Following the incident in Indore, engineers in Bhopal are looking for for similar problematic pipelines. Mayor Malti Rai has instructed sub-engineers, assistant engineers, and supervisors to conduct inspections. The Superintending Engineer and Executive Engineer have been asked to monitor the situation to determine if contaminated water is being supplied. Orders have also been given to submit reports after the inspections.
Water samples collected and tested
Water samples have been collected from over 200 locations across Bhopal on Sunday, including various slum areas, and tested through eight laboratories in the city. Additionally, sewage chambers were cleaned at 45 locations and 52 complaints received through the CM Helpline and Mayor's Helpline were satisfactorily resolved and closed. Leaks in pipelines were also repaired at 24 locations.
Earlier on Saturday, water samples were collected and tested from 258 locations in the city. The water quality was found to be suitable. The water works department staff repaired leaks in pipelines at 138 locations and also cleaned large tanks and sumps. The municipal staff also satisfactorily resolved 13 complaints related to water supply received through the CM Helpline and 5 complaints received through the Mayor's Helpline.
In Indore, 15 people lost their lives due to drinking contaminated water. A similar threat is looming in Bhopal. Complaints related to contaminated water are emerging from several areas of the city. In response, the municipal corporation staff has sprung into action and is conducting investigations. Even on Sunday, a holiday, municipal teams toured the city and collected water samples.
Sewage and water lines are located close
According to reports, in many places, the sewage and water lines are located close to each other in HFA schemes, JNNURM projects, illegal colonies, slums, Housing Board colonies, and BDA colonies. Additionally, in the multi-story buildings of Karond, Eidgah Hills, and the 12 Number area, the valves are submerged in sewage.
10 complaints of contaminated water are being registered every month
As a result, an average of 10 complaints of contaminated water are being registered every month at the municipal corporation call center and the CM Helpline. Residents of Vajpayee Nagar in Eidgah Hills, the Housing Board colony in Karond, Roshanpura, and Swastik Nagar colony in Neelbad have also complained about the supply of dirty water. People say that foul-smelling and muddy water comes from their taps, making it difficult to use.
As a result, teams were in the field and conducted tests for odor, color, taste, residual chlorine, pH, turbidity, and bacterial contamination. Sufficient levels of residual chlorine were found, and all other parameters were also found to be within acceptable limits. The municipal corporation staff collected and tested water samples from a total of 721 locations across all zones from December 31st to the present. The water quality was found to be satisfactory.
