The Election Commission will announce the dates for the assembly elections in the states of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry today at 4:00 PM.

The terms of all five legislative assemblies are set to expire in May. In 2021, the elections for all these five states were announced on February 26. On the previous occasion, elections in Bengal were held over eight phases; voting in Assam took place across three phases, while Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry went to the polls in a single phase.

It is anticipated that elections in Bengal, Assam, and Tamil Nadu will be conducted in two phases each, while those in Kerala and Puducherry are likely to be held in a single phase.

Intensifying Political Activity

In these elections, the eyes of the entire nation are fixed particularly on West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. In West Bengal, a fierce contest is expected between the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP. In Tamil Nadu as well, an intense electoral battle is anticipated between the AIADMK and the DMK. Meanwhile, in Kerala and Assam, too, a fierce electoral struggle for power is likely to unfold among the political parties.

Among the five states slated for elections, Tamil Nadu has seen the highest number of voters' names deleted following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. The Election Commission stated that as of October 27, 2025—when the SIR process commenced—the state had a total of 6 crore 41 lakh 14 thousand 587 registered voters. During the SIR, which spanned approximately four months, the names of 74 lakh 07 thousand 207 individuals were removed from the rolls. Consequently, the state now has 5 crore 67 lakh 07 thousand 380 registered voters.

West Bengal ranks second on this list, with the names of approximately 58 lakh people having been deleted. This is followed by Kerala, where 8 lakh names were removed; Assam, with 2 lakh removals; and Puducherry, which recorded the lowest number of deletions at 77,000 following the SIR process. In Assam, a Special Revision (SR) exercise was conducted.
