How mythological site Kampilya in UP will become world-class tourism hub as part of Mahabharata Circuit
Farrukhabad: Kampilya (or Kampil)—an historical and mythological site located in the Farrukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh—is now poised to become a world-class tourism hub, undergoing development as part of a 'Mahabharata-era Circuit' under a project worth Rs 4.70 crore.
Kampilya is an extremely ancient and historic town, renowned for its mythological and cultural heritage. Official sources stated that the state government has approved this project and has already released Rs 1.40 crore as the first installment.
Kampil, which served as the capital of the Panchal kingdom during the Mahabharata era, is renowned as the birthplace of Draupadi and holds a distinct identity on the tourism map due to its rich historical and religious heritage.
Modern amenities will be developed
The Department of Tourism and Culture will develop modern amenities at the site to ensure a superior experience for tourists visiting from both within the country and abroad. Utilizing modern technology, interactive interpretation installations will be established to introduce visitors to the site's ancient history and associated events; approximately Rs 2.37 crore will be invested in these installations.
Through these exhibits, information regarding Draupadi's birth, her Swayamvar (ceremonial marriage selection), her relationship with Lord Krishna, and details concerning the ashram of Sage Kapila will be presented.
Grand makeover will be given to Rameshwar Nath Temple
Additionally, there are plans to give a grand makeover to the Rameshwar Nath Temple, a project expected to cost over Rs 30 lakh. An attractive entrance gate will also be constructed for the temple. According to religious belief, it was at this very spot during the Treta Yuga that Lord Rama's younger brother, Shatrughna, consecrated a Shivling (an iconic representation of Lord Shiva).
Tourist Facility Center will be developed
With the comfort of tourists in mind, a modern Tourist Facility Center will also be developed at a cost of Rs 55 lakh, offering amenities such as clean restrooms, drinking water, and resting areas. According to the District Information Officer, acting under the directives of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state is currently being developed into 12 major tourism circuits—one of which is the Mahabharata Circuit. This initiative is expected to attract tourists from both India and abroad, including devotees of Lord Krishna.
Kampil is also the birthplace of Lord Vimalnath
It is noteworthy that Kampil is also the birthplace of Lord Vimalnath, the 13th Tirthankara of Jainism, while the nearby site of Sankisa ranks among the key pilgrimage sites associated with Lord Buddha. Thus, this region holds multifaceted religious and cultural significance, and the State Government is committed to its holistic development.
