Maharashtra Bike Taxi Ban: Ola, Uber, and Rapido's bike-taxis banned, livelihoods of thousands of drivers to be impacted
In a major move to address violations of transportation rules in the state, the Maharashtra government has banned the bike taxi services of Ola, Uber, and Rapido with immediate effect. The government has revoked the temporary licenses of these three major companies. This action was primarily taken due to their disregard for environmental regulations and illegal operation of petrol-powered vehicles.
This strict decision by the state government has completely halted bike taxi services in major cities like Mumbai and Pune, potentially impacting the livelihoods of thousands of drivers.
Permission to operate only e-bike taxis
The Maharashtra government had granted these companies permission to operate only electric bike taxis (e-bike taxis). The aim was to promote eco-friendly transport in the state and provide employment to local youth. However, an investigation found that companies were rampantly using petrol-powered bikes instead of electric ones. The government has termed this a violation of rules and a "cheating" of the administration.
Licenses will be permanently revoked
MLA and senior leader Pratap Sarnaik clarified that the companies had previously been given time to submit the required documents, but they did not follow the instructions. The government has now given the companies a one-month deadline. If they fail to meet the requirements within this period, their licenses will be permanently revoked.
Bike owners and drivers will be prosecuted
The government has made it clear that strict action will no longer be limited to paperwork, but will also be taken on the ground:
If any petrol bike taxi is found operating, it will be immediately confiscated.
In case of violation of rules, cases will be filed not only against the app company but also against the driver and vehicle owner.
Only electric vehicles will be allowed
The government has reiterated that only electric vehicles will be allowed in the future to maintain safety and environmental standards.
This decision by the state government is expected to curb illegal bike taxi services in Mumbai. The Transport Department has also advised passengers to avoid using these services for the time being.
