MP: Women's Growing Footprint in Modern Agriculture: How Agar's Reena Became a 'Drone Sakhi'?
Modern technology is now empowering women in rural India to take a new flight toward self-reliance. Reena Chandel, from the village of Thadoda in the Agar district, stands as an inspiring example of this transformation.
The drone operation training she received—through the collaborative efforts of the Aajeevika Mission and NAFED—has not only given Reena a new identity but has also positioned her as a pioneer of modern farming across various villages. Now, utilizing drone technology, Reena is spraying farmers' fields, establishing a strong presence in the agricultural sector by working shoulder-to-shoulder with men.
After completing her training, Reena began the task of bringing drone technology directly to farmers' fields throughout the district. She personally operates the drones, spraying pesticides and nutrients across the fields.
Reena sprayed land during Rabi and Kharif seasons
During the Kharif season, Reena sprayed approximately 121 acres of land belonging to 42 farmers, providing her services at a rate of Rs 500 per acre. Subsequently, during the Rabi season, she promoted modern agricultural practices by conducting drone spraying on approximately 156 acres of land owned by 56 farmers.
Reena now imparts knowledge of modern farming techniques to women SHGs
Recognizing Reena's proactiveness and hard work, the Department of Agriculture has also entrusted her with the responsibility of serving as a "Krishi Sakhi" (Agricultural Companion). Following district-level training, she now imparts knowledge regarding modern farming techniques to women's self-help groups and local farmers. For this work, the department provides her with a monthly honorarium of Rs 5,000.
Reena has guided farmers toward better farming practices
Reena Chandel's story demonstrates that, given the right opportunities and training, rural women too can set new benchmarks in the field of technology. By utilizing modern tools like drones, she has not only expanded her own sources of income but has also guided farmers toward better farming practices, helping them save both time and labor.
