US-Israel-Iran war: Iranian warship attacked by US submarine near Sri Lanka, 80 believed killed, many missing
Today is the fifth day of the US-Israel-Iran war. The US launched a submarine attack on the Iranian warship IRIS Dena off the coast of Sri Lanka. Several people are reported killed. According to the Sri Lankan Navy, several bodies have been recovered from the ship.
Eighty soldiers aboard the Iranian warship that sank off Sri Lanka have been killed, Sri Lanka's Deputy Foreign Minister said. He told local media that the ship was returning to Iran from an eastern Indian port after participating in a naval event when it was attacked in the Indian Ocean.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that a US submarine torpedoed and sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean today.
Thirty-two soldiers were injured in the attack and have been rescued. The ship was carrying approximately 180 sailors. A search and rescue operation is underway to locate the missing. The Iranian warship was returning from the 2026 International Fleet Review held in Visakhapatnam, India, last month.
Sri Lankan officials said that the message for help was sent between 6 and 7 a.m. (Indian time) on Wednesday. The ship was about 40 nautical miles (about 75 kilometers) from the southern Sri Lankan city of Galle. Officials are trying to determine what happened to the remaining approximately 150 crew members.
