Historic Staging of ‘Samrat Vikramaditya Mahanatya’ on the Sacred Soil of Varanasi, audiences transported back to the golden era of thousands of years ago
Varanasi: The grand staging of the theatrical production “Samrat Vikramaditya” transported audiences back to the golden era of thousands of years ago. The play begins with Samrat Vikramaditya’s resolve to free the motherland from foreign invaders.
Through powerful performances by the artists, the stage came alive with the era when a great leader emerged to protect the people from the oppression of the Shakas. The massive sets depicting forts and royal palaces, combined with lighting and musical compositions, created a captivating atmosphere. The war scenes reflected bravery and valour, while the episodes depicting the emperor’s justice filled the audience with pride.
Grandeur of royal courts and battlefields brought vividly to life
One of the most striking aspects of the play was its realistic presentation, featuring Musth Elephants, galloping Horses and Camel caravans, which brought the grandeur of royal courts and battlefields vividly to life. The roar of elephants and the thunder of horses’ hooves recreated the atmosphere of a battlefield, thrilling the audience.
More than 400 artists performed with modern light-and-sound technology to depict the emperor’s sense of justice, indomitable courage, and the establishment of the Vikram Samvat era. The elaborate stage design with towering forts and royal palaces vividly recreated history.
Play also highlighted lesser-known aspects of Samrat Vikramaditya’s personality
The play also highlighted lesser-known aspects of Samrat Vikramaditya’s personality, portraying how he rose from a ruler to a Chakravarti Samrat. One deeply moving scene showed the emperor disguising himself and venturing out at night to understand the condition of his subjects.
Dialogues woven around the relevance of Vikram Samvat and the importance of Indian time calculation were presented in simple yet powerful language. The scenes based on the emperor’s justice and the ‘Singhasan Battisi’ stories conveyed the message that leadership is not merely about power but about sacrifice and commitment to justice.
During the first evening of the three-day event, such a large number of people and tourists gathered that the venue seemed too small to accommodate the crowd. As the play reached its climax, the air resonated with chants of ‘Jai Mahakal’ and ‘Samrat Vikramaditya’ ki Jai.
The audience remained immersed in the magical atmosphere
The grand play proved to be not just a performance but a powerful medium for reconnecting with cultural roots. The final scene, depicting the emperor’s coronation accompanied by a shower of flowers, filled every spectator with pride. Even after the event concluded, the audience remained immersed in the magical atmosphere created by the performance. The successful staging demonstrated that when history is presented with authenticity and grandeur, it continues to inspire and instil pride among people. The play is expected to become a significant cultural milestone in the years to come.
