Patna: Amidst the growing threat of climate change, Bihar has taken a significant stride in the agricultural sector by implementing climate-resilient farming on a large scale. Launched as a pilot project in the year 2019-20, this initiative has now reached all 38 districts of the state and continues to expand steadily. 190 villages across the state are setting a precedent by fully adopting climate-resilient farming practices.

In these villages, 20 different types of crop rotation cycles have been successfully demonstrated under the supervision of scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendras (Agricultural Science Centers). Between 2019 and 2025, Kharif, Rabi, and Garma crops were cultivated using this technique across 2.63 lakh acres of land, directly benefiting approximately 2.78 lakh farmers.

Notable progress has also been achieved in the realm of land improvement. 12,807 acres of land were leveled using laser land levelers, resulting in water conservation during irrigation as well as a reduction in production costs.

Nine varieties of millets are being cultivated

Under the climate-resilient farming initiative, nine varieties of millets—such as Sorghum (Jowar), Pearl Millet (Bajra), Finger Millet (Ragi), Barnyard Millet (Sanwa), Kodo Millet, Little Millet (Kutki), Foxtail Millet (Kangni), Proso Millet (Cheena), and Browntop Millet—are being cultivated across 1,910 acres. This is contributing to both nutritional security and an increase in farmers' incomes.

Furthermore, between 2019 and 2025, 6.4 lakh farmers underwent training and participated in exposure visits, thereby inspiring them to adopt modern agricultural techniques.

Improved Stubble Management Through New Technologies

According to official data, wheat has been sown across 1,892 acres using 'Happy Seeders.' According to experts, these efforts have not only fostered environmental conservation but have also achieved significant success in making agriculture more sustainable and profitable. This model from Bihar is now becoming a source of inspiration for other states.
