Taking a significant step towards strengthening the education system, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved the recruitment of 434 special educators in council schools.

This decision follows clear directives from the Supreme Court of India, which mandated that Divyang children studying in mainstream schools must also be provided with the services of trained teachers tailored to their specific needs. This comes as welcome news for the candidates and parents who have been awaiting this recruitment drive for a long time.

In its order, the Supreme Court also clarified that a mandatory teacher-to-student ratio must be strictly implemented: a maximum of 5 students per teacher (1:5) for children with severe disabilities, and 8 students per teacher (1:8) for children in other categories.

This arrangement will ensure that children receive individualized attention, thereby enhancing both their learning capabilities and their self-confidence. This initiative is regarded as a crucial step toward implementing inclusive education at the grassroots level.

Appointment Process Picks Up

Additional Chief Secretary Partha Sarathi Sen Sharma has issued directives to the Department of Basic Education to complete this recruitment process without delay and to submit a report regarding the same to the government expeditiously. Previously, the screening committee had deemed 540 candidates eligible, out of whom 434 have been finally selected for appointment. It is now expected that they will soon be deployed to schools.

Only Qualified and Trained Teachers to be Appointed

The government has clarified that only those candidates possessing a degree or diploma recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) will be appointed. This measure aims to ensure that children with disabilities receive guidance from trained and competent teachers. This initiative will not only enhance their academic learning but also enable them to compete effectively with their peers without disabilities.
