What did Iranian Supreme Leader's representative say regarding firing on Indian-flagged ship in Strait of Hormuz?
The representative of Iran's Supreme Leader in India has responded to the incident involving gunfire directed at two Indian-flagged ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Dr. Abdul Majid Hakim Elahi, the representative of Iran's Supreme Leader in India, told the media, "The relationship between Iran and India is very strong, and I do not have information regarding this specific incident. We hope that everything will be fine and that this matter will be resolved."
He further added, "We do not want this war. We desire peace and hope that the other side also adheres to peace so that tranquility is maintained in our region."
While the Strait was in the process of being reopened, two Indian-flagged vessels—the cargo ship Jag Arnav and the oil tanker Sanmar Herald—were ordered by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to deviate from their designated routes. Gunfire also occurred during this incident.
Iran's Ambassador called
Folowing the incident, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in New Delhi was called in by the Ministry of External Affairs for a meeting with Foreign Secretary Saturday evening. During the meeting, Foreign Secretary conveyed India’s deep concern at the shooting incident earlier in the day involving two Indian-flagged ships in the Strait of Hormuz. He noted the importance that India attached to the safety of merchant shipping and mariners and recalled that Iran had earlier facilitated the safe passage of several ships bound for India.
Reiterating his concern at this serious incident of firing on merchant ships, Foreign Secretary urged the Ambassador to convey India’s views to the authorities in Iran and resume at the earliest the process of facilitating India-bound ships across the Strait.
