A Bumpy Road Ahead for TMC: Mamata Banerjee's party enters a new political battle in W Bengal

🎧 Listen to this Article:

After dominating West Bengal politics for over a decade, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) now appears to be entering one of the most difficult phases in its political journey. Mamata Banerjee’s charisma, grassroots connect, and image as the protector of Bengali identity helped the party remain politically invincible for years. But the 2026 electoral setback has made one thing clear — the road ahead for the TMC is going to be far more challenging than before.

The biggest challenge before the party is leadership transition. Mamata Banerjee continues to remain the tallest and most popular face of the TMC, but questions about the future leadership of the party are beginning to grow louder. Abhishek Banerjee is widely seen as the heir apparent, yet there is still no complete consensus within the party ranks about his leadership.

More TMC leaders may begin exploring political alternatives

The second major concern is organisational cracks within the party. Leaders like Suvendu Adhikari had already left the TMC earlier, and after a major electoral defeat, more regional leaders may begin exploring political alternatives for survival. History shows that parties accustomed to long periods in power often witness internal unrest after losing elections, and the TMC may not be immune to that pattern.

Corruption allegations

Corruption allegations have also become a serious burden for the party. Recruitment scams, investigations by central agencies, and arrests of senior leaders have damaged the TMC’s image. The opposition successfully built a narrative that years in power had led to corruption, arrogance, and disconnect from ordinary people.

Ideological challenge

The TMC is also facing an ideological challenge. While the BJP has aggressively pushed Hindutva and nationalist politics in Bengal, the TMC has largely positioned itself as the defender of Bengali identity and regional pride. In the coming years, the party will have to decide whether it wants to strengthen its regional identity further or play a larger role in national opposition politics.

TMC’s traditional support base eroding

Rural Bengal, once considered the TMC’s strongest fortress, is now emerging as a major battleground. The BJP’s growing influence in regions like North Bengal, Junglemahal, and coastal districts has deeply challenged the TMC’s traditional support base.

Can TMC reinvent itself once again

However, writing off the TMC completely would be a mistake. Mamata Banerjee still remains one of the most influential political figures in Bengal, and the party’s grassroots cadre network is still extremely strong. Bengal’s politics has always been emotional, dynamic, and unpredictable. A determined opposition campaign could allow the TMC to reinvent itself once again.

But one thing is certain — the road ahead for the TMC is no longer smooth. The party now faces the difficult task of rebuilding itself politically, organisationally, and ideologically. For the TMC, this is no longer just a battle for power; it is a battle for relevance, survival, and the future of its politics in Bengal.
