Bengal's New Political Era: Suvendu Adhikari's Biggest Battle Begins

🎧 Listen to this Article:

Suvendu Adhikari today is the man of the hour, a senior Bengali politician, one of the biggest faces of the BJP in West Bengal is now the chief minister.

He began his political journey in the Congress, later became a key leader of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC), and eventually joined the BJP in 2020.

He became nationally famous after defeating Mamata Banerjee in the high-profile Nandigram election in 2021 and again emerged as BJP’s strongest Bengal leader during the 2026 Assembly elections. Many political observers describe him as the architect of BJP’s breakthrough in Bengal.

His political rise is deeply connected to the Nandigram movement of 2007, where protests against land acquisition helped weaken the Left Front government and eventually paved the way for Mamata Banerjee’s rise to power. Ironically, the same Suvendu later became her strongest rival.

His main quslities

Strong grassroots connect: Suvendu is known as an on-ground mass leader rather than only a television politician. He built influence district by district, especially in East Midnapore and rural Bengal.

Aggressive political fighter: He has a very combative political style and is considered BJP’s sharpest attacker against Mamata Banerjee in Bengal politics.

Understanding of Bengal politics: Because he spent years inside TMC, he understands the party’s organisation, voter networks, and election machinery extremely well. This made him strategically valuable for BJP.

Election-winning ability One of the biggest reasons behind his rise is that he has repeatedly won difficult elections and defeated powerful opponents. His victories against Mamata Banerjee made him a “giant killer” in Indian politics.

Organisational leadership: Political analysts credit him with helping BJP expand rapidly in Bengal’s rural belt and coastal districts.

Strong ideological positioning: After joining BJP, he became one of the strongest proponents of the party’s Hindutva-oriented political messaging in Bengal, which helped BJP consolidate a large section of Hindu voters.

Was seen as the only choice for Bengal Chief Minister

Many analysts believe Suvendu became the “natural choice” for BJP in Bengal for various reasons:

He was BJP’s strongest Bengali face: Unlike some leaders seen as Delhi-centric, Suvendu is viewed as a deeply rooted Bengali mass leader.

He directly challenged Mamata Banerjee: Very few leaders in Bengal politics have successfully challenged Mamata politically on the ground. Suvendu not only challenged her but defeated her in symbolic battles.

BJP lacked another equally powerful regional leader: While names like Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, and Roopa Ganguly were discussed, Suvendu had the strongest organisational control and electoral credibility.

He represents BJP’s “regional strongman” model: Political commentators compared him to leaders like Himanta Biswa Sarma in Assam — former regional-party insiders who later became BJP’s key state leaders.

Symbolic value: For BJP, choosing Suvendu also symbolised defeating TMC on its own turf using a former TMC heavyweight.

Challenges

Today Adhikari has many challenges as he inherits a crown of thorns from Mamta

He needs to Govern a politically polarised Bengal: West Bengal remains deeply politically divided between BJP and TMC supporters. Maintaining law and order and reducing political violence will be a major challenge.

Balancing Hindutva and Bengali identity: He has to balance BJP’s national ideological politics with Bengal’s strong regional and cultural identity, which is very important in the state’s politics.

Handling minority a major concern: Some of his statements and BJP’s polarising campaign style may make sections of minority communities apprehensive. Building trust across communities will be crucial.

Need to deliver governance, not just opposition politics: As opposition leader, aggressive politics worked for him. As Chief Minister, voters will expect solutions on:

jobs

industries

corruption

education

infrastructure

political stability

Managing BJP’s internal factions also a major challenge West Bengal BJP has several power centres and ideological camps. Keeping all leaders united could become difficult over time.

He will have to face a strong opposition Even after electoral defeat, Mamata Banerjee and TMC still remain emotionally and politically influential in Bengal. Suvendu will constantly face strong resistance both politically and on the streets.

He has to meet the expectations from Delhi leadership Because Bengal is such a symbolic state for BJP, expectations from the central leadership and supporters will be extremely high.

Overall, Suvendu Adhikari is seen as a sharp strategist, mass mobiliser, and aggressive political fighter. But his biggest test now begins: transforming from an opposition warrior into an administrator who can govern a complex and politically divided state.
