Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah to Resign; DK Shivakumar to be the New CM
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is set to tender his resignation today on Thursday at 3 PM. He had convened a breakfast meeting with his cabinet ministers at his residence in Bengaluru, during which he apprised all the ministers of his decision.
The Chief Minister announced this to his council of ministers at the breakfast meeting held on Thursday morning.
He also confirmed DK Shivakumar as the next Chief Minister, according to ministers present at the meeting.
Siddaramaiah informed his ministers that he would be resigning in the afternoon. He will be heading to Lok Bhavan at 2.30 pm. Minister Santhosh Lad broke down in tears while speaking to the media and confirming that Siddaramiah would be stepping down.
DK Shivakumar Siddaramaiah's feet
Deputy CM DK Shivakumar also attended the meeting. Shivakumar touched Siddaramaiah's feet, following which the CM embraced him. HK Patil, a minister in the Karnataka government, confirmed that DK Shivakumar's name was officially endorsed during the meeting; he will serve as the next Chief Minister.
Siddaramaiah had sought an appointment to meet with Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot. However, the Governor is currently out of Bengaluru due to personal family reasons. Consequently, Siddaramaiah may submit his resignation to the Governor's office.
As per protocol, even if the Governor is not physically present in the state, the Chief Minister may submit a written resignation to the Raj Bhavan officials—either via email or by delivering it in person. The Governor subsequently accepts the resignation. The incumbent Chief Minister remains in office until the resignation is formally accepted.
Congress High Command will officially announce Shivakumar's name
Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao stated that following Siddaramaiah's resignation, the Congress High Command would officially announce Shivakumar's name for the post of Chief Minister.
Dinesh Gundu Rao said, "CM Siddaramaiah will continue to serve as an MLA. CM made no mention of moving to the Rajya Sabha. He also emphasized that our objective must be to defeat the BJP in 2028, and that he would extend his full support towards achieving this goal."
