Following the results of the assembly elections held in five states—specifically the manner in which the ruling TMC in West Bengal and the DMK in Tamil Nadu faced setbacks—speculations regarding the future of the INDIA Alliance have begun.

The election results in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu have shaken the very foundations of the INDIA alliance. With Mamata Banerjee's crushing defeat in Bengal and Stalin's weakening grip in Tamil Nadu, the future of the alliance appears bleak. Dissenting voices rising within the Samajwadi Party, coupled with the Congress's silence, have exposed the hollowness of the claims of unity. The question now remains: will this alliance be able to survive until 2027?

Mamata Banerjee has termed her defeat in West Bengal a conspiracy. She stated, "These atrocities are alarming, and I am grateful to those leaders of the INDIA alliance who called to extend their support." Leaders such as Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, and Akhilesh Yadav have offered words of solace to Mamata. However, all is not well within the alliance.

Has the rift between Akhilesh and Kiranmoy Nanda widened?

While Akhilesh Yadav described this defeat as a "dark day" for democracy, Kiranmoy Nanda—the National Vice President of his own party—surprised everyone by citing the Mamata government's corruption and anti-incumbency as the true reasons behind the defeat.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav launched a scathing attack on the BJP via social media. He raised questions regarding the electoral process and the misuse of central forces. Akhilesh termed the outcome an "open loot of the public mandate." However, the sentiments expressed by his own close confidant, Kiranmoy Nanda, were entirely at odds.

What lies ahead for INDIA bloc?

It is being reported that, in the wake of the defeats suffered by these two parties, certain senior leaders within the Congress party are advocating for fighting future electoral battles independently.

Conversely, the majority of leaders are arguing in favor of convening a meeting as soon as possible to consolidate the opposition bloc, with the aim of holding comprehensive discussions on future strategies and opposition unity.

Furthermore, another line of discussion suggests forming a "Third Front"—comprising a broad coalition of like-minded parties, but excluding the Congress—to present an alternative choice to the nation's voters.

Amidst all these discussions, however, all eyes remain fixed on the stance adopted by major parties such as the SP, RJD, TMC, DMK, and the Shiv Sena (Uddhav faction).

Earlier, the BJP had said that the election results have exposed deep fissures within the INDIA alliance and that this opposition coalition has no future. The party also took aim at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, asserting that he has failed to effectively lead the alliance forward and is once again conspicuous by his absence on the day of vote counting.
