What Lies Ahead After BJP's Success in Northeast? Is saffron party's next destination Punjab?
Following its victory in West Bengal and its return to power in Assam, political circles are abuzz with speculation about the next direction the BJP's victorious chariot will take after having conquered the northeastern states.
However, given that the BJP has consistently met with failure in its ongoing campaign to make the 'Lotus bloom' in the South—despite persistent efforts—it is being suggested that, ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, the party's focus may shift toward capturing Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
This assessment is reinforced by recent events, specifically the manner in which seven Rajya Sabha members hailing from Punjab—belonging to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)—have defected to join the BJP.
this clearly indicates that the party intends to send a powerful message by simultaneously challenging the Congress, the Akali Dal, and the AAP in Punjab. It is, in all likelihood, for this very reason that the strategists within the Aam Aadmi Party are feeling unsettled by the looming threat of the BJP's 'Mission Punjab.'
Shah's next focus is Punjab?
The dust has barely settled in West Bengal when the BJP has already begun to shift its focus elsewhere. After more than fifty rallies in Bengal and a fifteen-day-long election campaign, Union Home Minister Amit Shah's next stop is Punjab. The objective is crystal clear: to crack down on narcotics, expand the organizational base, and make a direct push to capture power in 2027.
Punjab is rapidly emerging as the BJP's next political battleground. Amit Shah's strategic pivot from the electoral campaign in the East to concentrate on the North is no ordinary occurrence; it signals the inception of a long-term electoral strategy.
Starting in May, Shah is expected to undertake regular visits to the state. The plan is clear: a sustained presence of the leadership, deep organizational penetration, and an electoral narrative woven around governance failures—particularly the drug menace.
