What did CJI Surya Kant say after social media row over his remarks on youths?
The Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, issued a clarification on Saturday regarding his oral observations.
He stated that a section of the media had misrepresented his remarks, portraying them as if he had criticized the country's youth.
In a statement issued after his reported comments sparked a controversy on social media, the Chief Justice clarified that his observations were directed solely against those who have entered professions—such as the legal field—by relying on fake or fraudulent degrees, and not against the youth in general.
The CJI said, "I was distressed to observe that a section of the media misrepresented the oral observations I made yesterday during the hearing of a frivolous matter. I had specifically criticized those who have gained entry into fields such as the Bar (the legal profession) with the aid of fake and fraudulent degrees. Such individuals have infiltrated the media, social media, and other esteemed professions as well; they are, therefore, akin to parasites."
The CJI stated: "It is completely baseless to suggest that I have criticized the youth of our country. Not only do I take pride in our nation's current and future human resource potential, but every young Indian also serves as an inspiration to me. It would be no exaggeration to say that the Indian youth hold me in high esteem, and I, in turn, view them as the pillars of a developed India."
What is the matter?
The matter pertained to a petition filed by a lawyer, in which allegations were leveled against the Delhi High Court regarding delays in the appointment process of senior advocates and negligence in adhering to the rules.
However, during the hearing on Friday, the Bench categorically stated that the designation of "Senior Advocate" is not a status symbol, but rather an honor bestowed by the court.
The CJI stated that certain sections of the 'media, social media, and RTI activists' are constantly attacking the judiciary.
The Chief Justice remarked, "There are certain parasites in society who attack the system. They fail to find employment and have no place in professional life. Some of them turn to the media, some become active on social media, others become RTI activists, and then they begin attacking everyone."
