6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes North India; Tremors Felt from Kashmir to Delhi
Panic ensued briefly on Saturday evening after strong earthquake tremors were felt across several parts of North India. The tremors were experienced in multiple regions, including Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi, and the National Capital Region (NCR). According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake—measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale—originated in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan at a depth of 215 kilometers.
People rushed out of their homes
People in Srinagar, Kupwara, Baramulla, Jammu, Delhi, Gurugram, and surrounding areas rushed out of their homes, offices, and commercial buildings as the ground shook for several seconds. Reports of tremors also emerged from neighboring countries, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and parts of China.
No immediate reports of casualties or damage to property
Despite the wide area affected, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property. Officials stated that the situation is being closely monitored, while the National Center for Seismology confirmed the details of the earthquake.
This event serves as a reminder of the region's seismic vulnerability, particularly given that the Hindu Kush area is frequently prone to seismic activity. Although Saturday's earthquake caused alarm, it did not result in any major damage.
This earthquake follows a series of significant seismic events across various parts of the world in recent times, underscoring the need for constant preparedness and public awareness in seismically sensitive regions.
