The inclusion of the renowned Maihar Band in the Government of India's 'National Intangible Cultural Heritage' (ICH) list has brought honor to Madhya Pradesh. This recognition celebrates one of India's finest classical music traditions and further strengthens the state's growing reputation as a guardian of rich cultural heritage. Previously, the Bhagoria dance and Gond painting had also secured a place in this prestigious national list.

Govt establising a Gurukul

With the aim of preserving this extraordinary musical tradition for future generations, the Madhya Pradesh Department of Culture is establishing a Gurukul at the Government Music College in Maihar. Young musicians will be trained in the band's distinctive style, helping to carry forward its centuries-old *Guru-Shishya* (teacher-disciple) tradition.

India's first classical orchestra

Established in 1918 by the legendary musician Ustad Allauddin Khan under the patronage of Maharaja Brijnath Singh Judeo, the Maihar Band is widely regarded as India's first classical orchestra. Over the past 108 years, it has carved a unique identity by blending Indian and Western instruments such as the sitar, sarod, esraj, violin, cello, harmonium, and tabla.

Its most intriguing instrument is the 'Naltarang,' created by Ustad Allauddin Khan using specially tuned gun barrels. Found exclusively in the Maihar Band, this instrument has continued to mesmerize music lovers across the globe.

A symbol of India's classical music heritage

From a memorable performance at the Bhatkhande Festival in Lucknow in 1924 to receiving the 'Shikhar Samman' in 2016, the orchestra remains a symbol of India's classical music heritage. This latest honor is expected to provide fresh impetus to efforts aimed at preserving and promoting this extraordinary cultural legacy.
