Bhopal Comes to a Standstill After One Hour of Storm and Rain; Power Snapped, Traffic Halted
Bhopal. The heavy rain and gusty winds that lashed the capital city of Bhopal for nearly an hour on Thursday exposed the stark reality of the city's civic infrastructure. Prior to the rains, the Municipal Corporation had claimed to have undertaken extensive cleaning of drains, while the electricity utility company boasted of comprehensive maintenance work; however, the very first heavy downpour caused several of these systems to crumble.
Power supply was disrupted in many parts of the city, vehicular traffic on the roads was thrown into disarray, and routes were blocked in various locations as tree branches snapped and fell.
300 Feeders Shut Down; City Plunged into Darkness
Due to the rain and strong winds, approximately 300 electricity feeders across the capital were affected. Consequently, power outages were reported in most parts of the city, including Govindpura, Ashoka Garden, BHEL, MP Nagar, and New Market.
Several areas remained shrouded in darkness for nearly an hour. In recent years, approximately Rs 800 crore has been spent with the aim of strengthening the power infrastructure. This included laying new cables and installing new transformers; yet, the very first rainfall laid bare the inherent weaknesses of the system.
Routes Blocked as Tree Branches Snap
The Horticulture Wing of the Municipal Corporation had carried out tree-pruning operations prior to the monsoon; however, the fierce winds caused tree branches to snap and fall at nearly 200 locations across the city. This disrupted traffic flow and led to traffic-jam-like situations in several areas, including Professor Colony, Polytechnic Square, Link Roads 1, 2, and 3, Kolar Road, Awadhpuri, and Tulsi Nagar.
Questions Raised Over Claims of Drain Cleaning
As is the case every year, the Municipal Corporation had claimed to have conducted a pre-monsoon drain-cleaning drive this time as well. Despite these claims, water-logging occurred in several low-lying areas during the very first rainfall.
Complaints regarding water inundation were received from Bhopal Talkies, Ashoka Garden, Press Complex, and other vulnerable areas. This has raised serious questions regarding the Corporation's preparedness and the actual effectiveness of its cleaning operations. The very first heavy downpour has signaled that the administration needs to make more serious efforts regarding the city's arrangements during the monsoon season.
