Monsoon Likely to Arrive in Kerala June 4 Evening; Check IMD Warning of Heavy Rainfall in Several States
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Southwest Monsoon is expected to make its much-anticipated arrival in Kerala between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM on Wednesday. Officials stated that weather conditions have now become highly favorable for the onset of the monsoon; heavy rainfall is also expected in isolated pockets of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over the coming week.
This arrival marks a delay of nine days compared to the IMD's previous forecast issued on May 26. Typically, the monsoon reaches Kerala around June 1st and subsequently advances gradually across the rest of the country over the following six weeks.
While Kerala awaits the official onset of the monsoon, pre-monsoon activity is intensifying across several northern and central states. Due to the formation of Cumulonimbus (CB) clouds, thunderstorms accompanied by rain and strong winds gusting between 50 and 70 km/h are likely in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana.
Often referred to as the "owerhouses" of weather systems, Cumulonimbus clouds are known for generating severe storms, lightning, strong winds, and torrential rainfall.
Despite increased rainfall activity in several regions, intense heatwave conditions persist in certain parts of the country. Temperatures remain above 40 degrees Celsius in Gujarat, western Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.
Rain and Thunderstorm Alert Issued for 24 States
The IMD has issued an alert for 24 states, forecasting rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds across various regions, including Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, and Telangana. An alert for heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and strong winds has been issued for Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, while a 'Yellow Alert' will remain in effect for Delhi for the next two days.
Kerala has been experiencing widespread rainfall since Tuesday. In light of this, the IMD has issued a three-hour 'Orange Alert' for the districts of Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam. An 'Orange Alert' signifies the likelihood of very heavy rainfall, ranging from 11 cm to 20 cm. June 5 Forecast:
An 'Orange Alert' has been issued for Rajasthan, Gujarat, Western Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh, where thunderstorms and adverse weather conditions are anticipated.
Heavy rainfall is expected to persist until Saturday in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Kerala, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
The IMD has also warned of isolated hailstorms accompanied by thunderstorms in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Central Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh.
