New Delhi: On the upcoming 10th of June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to set a new record for being the longest-serving elected Prime Minister of independent India. Until now, this record was held by the country's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Modi took the oath as Prime Minister for the first time on May 26, 2014. Since then, he has been serving continuously as the country's elected Prime Minister. On the upcoming 10th of June, he will complete 4,399 days in office as Prime Minister.

This surpasses the 4,398-day tenure of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as an elected Prime Minister. Pandit Nehru served as Prime Minister from May 13, 1952, to May 27, 1964. Although Pandit Nehru became India's Prime Minister on August 15, 1947—immediately after independence—he was not elected at that time, but rather served as the Prime Minister in the interim government.

Prior to this, PM Modi had already surpassed the 4,077-day tenure of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Indira Gandhi served continuously as Prime Minister from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977; although she was subsequently elected as Prime Minister again in 1980.

PM Modi has also completed over 9,000 days of service cumulatively as both Chief Minister and Prime Minister. He took the oath as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term on June 9, 2024.

According to sources, a significant meeting of the Chief Ministers of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) state governments is scheduled for June 10, during which Modi will be felicitated for this achievement. A resolution is also likely to be passed on this occasion.
