Mukhyamantri Samuhik Vivah Yojana: Yogi govt in UP shoulders responsibility for daughters' weddings—5.54 lakh marriages in 9 years; Rs 60,000 transferred directly to accounts
Mass Marriage Scheme Becomes a Support System for Daughters of Poor Families
Lucknow: Under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh government's public welfare schemes are consistently reaching those in need. One such initiative is the Chief Minister's Mass Marriage Scheme (Mukhyamantri Samuhik Vivah Yojana), which has played a pivotal role in facilitating the marriages of daughters from economically weaker families. Over the past nine years, the marriages of more than 5.54 lakh daughters from poor families have been solemnized under this scheme.
Benefits for Needy Families Across All Sections
Administered by the Social Welfare Department, this scheme caters to economically weaker families belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), the General category, and minority communities. The government asserts that benefits are extended based on eligibility rather than caste or religion.
Over 1.80 Lakh Couples from the OBC Category Married
According to government data, 180,017 couples from the OBC category alone have been married under the Chief Minister's Mass Marriage Scheme over the last nine years. Furthermore, in the 2025-26 financial year, 26,286 OBC couples have availed the benefits of this scheme so far.
In total, the marriages of 5,54,202 daughters from poor families have been facilitated through this scheme during the tenure of the Yogi government.
Government Spending Rs 1 Lakh per Couple
Under the scheme, a total of ₹1 lakh is currently being spent on each couple. A significant portion of this amount is dedicated to the financial empowerment of the newlywed bride.
Rs 60,000 is transferred directly to the bride's bank account via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
Household items and jewelry worth Rs 25,000 are provided.
Rs 15,000 is spent on organizing the wedding ceremony.
The objective of this arrangement is to provide financial support to the newlywed couple as they embark on their new life together.
Social Welfare Department Plays a Crucial Role
The responsibility for implementing the scheme lies with the Social Welfare Department. The department organizes mass marriage ceremonies after verifying the beneficiaries. The administration arranges for tents, marquees, decorations, food, and other essentials for the wedding ceremonies, thereby relieving poor families of the financial burden.
Financial constraints will not hinder daughters' weddings
The government states that the objective of the 'Chief Minister's Mass Marriage Scheme' is not merely to conduct weddings but to ensure that financial hardship does not become an obstacle to the marriage of a daughter from any poor family. The scheme fosters social equality and provides financial support, ensuring that marriages are conducted with dignity.
Emphasis on transparency and DBT
A key feature of the scheme is the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. This ensures that funds reach the beneficiaries' accounts directly, eliminating the role of middlemen. The government asserts that transparency and accountability have made this scheme a source of trust among poor families.
The 'Chief Minister's Mass Marriage Scheme' has emerged as a major source of relief for economically disadvantaged families in Uttar Pradesh, offering lakhs of daughters the opportunity to begin a new life with dignity.
