Jalaun: Concerned over the deteriorating condition of Kalpi’s historic Yamuna ghats, a group of devotees led by lawyer Devendra Kumar Srivastava submitted a memorandum to the Governor through the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM). The memorandum demanded the immediate restoration and preservation of the city's centuries-old riverfront.

It specifically called for the renovation of Kila Ghat, Bihari Ghat, Pitambar Ghat, and Bai Ghat. Furthermore, it urged that the main stream of the Yamuna be scientifically reconnected to these historic ghats so that devotees could once again visit them.

Birthplace of Maharshi Vedvyas

Describing Kalpi as an ancient religious city and the birthplace of Maharshi Vedvyas, the delegation noted that these ghats have long been integral to the region's spiritual and cultural heritage. Every year, thousands of devotees visit to take holy dips and perform rituals during festivals and religious occasions. However, years of neglect, shifts in the Yamuna's course, and unchecked mining have left many of the ghats in a dilapidated state.

Bai Ghat on the verge of ruin

The memorandum highlighted the critical condition of Bai Ghat, where most of the steps have collapsed and the structure is on the verge of ruin. Pitambar Ghat has also suffered significant damage. Notably, the 'Yamuna Aarti' is performed there every Ekadashi under the supervision of Mahant Yamunadas Maharaj and Rishabh Dev Maharaj.

Yamuna river has receded

The delegation also pointed out that the Yamuna river has receded approximately 300 meters away from Kila Ghat, making it difficult for pilgrims to bathe or perform religious rituals. They urged the government to reconnect the river to Kila Ghat and Bihari Ghat by creating a channel using scientific methods.

Additionally, the memorandum demanded a detailed survey of all historic ghats, a dedicated conservation plan, and permanent arrangements for their maintenance, cleanliness, and security.

Living symbols of city's rich history and cultural identity

Speaking on the occasion, lawyer Devendra Kumar Srivastava stated that the ghats of Kalpi are not merely sites for worship but are living symbols of the city's rich history and cultural identity. He warned that if restoration work is not undertaken in time, a vital part of the region's heritage could be lost forever. ]
