What makes Jabalpur peas and water chestnut so special? How farmers will benefit from GI tag?

🎧 Listen to this Article:

The Government of India has awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag to two of Jabalpur's key agricultural products: 'Peas' (Matar) and 'Water Chestnut' (Singhara). On June 26, the Chennai-based GI Registry registered both products in its official GI journal. This marks the first time in the country that peas and water chestnuts from a specific region have received this unique recognition.

Padma Shri Dr. Rajnikant, renowned as the 'GI Man of India,' played a pivotal role as a subject matter expert throughout this process. He contributed significantly to validating the historical significance, unique quality, and geographical characteristics of Jabalpur's peas and water chestnuts.

New export opportunities will open

The GI tag will give these products a distinct identity in both national and international markets. This will open up new export opportunities, ensure farmers get better prices for their produce, and strengthen the region's agricultural economy.

Legal safeguard for the products

Additionally, the GI tag will serve as a legal safeguard for these products. External traders will no longer be able to sell ordinary peas or water chestnuts in the market under the names 'Jabalpur Peas' or 'Jabalpur Water Chestnut.' This will curb counterfeit branding and preserve the authenticity of the products.

Peas and water chestnuts produced here are considered superior

According to experts, the taste, quality, and nutritional value of the peas and water chestnuts produced here are considered superior to those from other regions, owing to the waters of the Narmada River and the fertile soil of the Jabalpur area.

Applications for both products were submitted by the Maikalsuta Farmer Producer Company (FPO) of Patan in October 2023 and January 2024. Company directors Raghvendra Singh Patel and Dhananjay Patel stated that, with the support of the state government and the Jabalpur Horticulture Department, robust documentation and evidence were presented to the GI Registrar.
