Glasgow: India added another medal to its growing weightlifting haul at the Commonwealth Games 2026 as Bindyarani Devi bagged the bronze medal in the women’s 58kg event after a spirited comeback in the clean and jerk competition here on Monday.

Her podium finish delivered India’s sixth medal of the Games after she registered a combined lift of 199kg. Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade dominated the event to claim gold with a total of 229kg, while Canada’s Ann Sophie Taschereau finished second with 215kg.

The 26-year-old lifter from Manipur finished with a combined total of 199kg, comprising 87kg in the snatch and 112kg in the clean and jerk, to secure a place on the podium.

Bindyarani made a flawless start in the snatch, successfully clearing 83kg, 85kg and 87kg in her three attempts to finish third after the opening discipline. She stayed ahead of England’s Eliza Pratt on countback despite both lifters recording the same best lift of 87kg.

Early setback

Bindyarani suffered an early setback in the clean and jerk when her opening lift of 110kg was initially ruled successful but was overturned following a jury review after officials detected an elbow buckle during the jerk phase.

Bindyarani bounced back

Showing remarkable composure, Bindyarani bounced back by clearing 112kg in her second attempt to remain in medal contention. She then attempted 116kg in a bid to improve her position but failed to complete the lift, settling for bronze with an overall total of 199kg.

The bronze further extended India’s impressive run in weightlifting at the Games. Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu had earlier scripted history by becoming the first Indian weightlifter to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals in the women’s 48kg category, while Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi bagged silver medals in the men’s 60kg and 65kg divisions respectively.

With Bindyarani’s podium finish, India’s weightlifters continued to spearhead the country’s medal campaign at the Birmingham Games.
