MP: How rail travel will now be safer in challenging areas like Ghat sections; kavach system operational on section of Itarsi-Nagpur route
Betul: Indian Railways has successfully commenced the operation of the indigenous automatic train protection system, 'Standard Kavach', on the Godhani-Tigaon Ghat section of the Itarsi-Nagpur railway route. Its implementation will make train operations on this busy route safer and more reliable, while also reducing the risk of accidents caused by human error.
According to information released by Central Railway, the commissioning of the Standard Kavach system on the Godhani-Tigaon section of the Nagpur Division marks a significant achievement in the realm of rail safety. This Ghat section of the Itarsi-Nagpur route is considered sensitive due to its steep gradients, heavy rail traffic, and challenging operational conditions.
Railway officials stated that Standard Kavach is a state-of-the-art, indigenously developed train protection system that continuously monitors train speed and operations. It assists the loco pilot in adhering to prescribed speed limits and is effective in preventing serious incidents, such as signal passing at danger. If necessary, the system can automatically apply brakes to avert potential accidents.

According to the Railways, this technology will play a crucial role in the safe operation of both passenger and freight trains in challenging areas like Ghat sections. It will improve operational efficiency and punctuality while facilitating smoother rail traffic flow.
Central Railway stated that the deployment of Standard Kavach is part of Indian Railways' modernization drive. Developed in line with the vision of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India), this indigenous technology will further strengthen the rail safety system and help provide safer, superior rail services to passengers.
