MP: How a small rainwater harvesting project in Jhabua's Chudeli is inspiring a larger water conservation movement
Jhabua: A small rainwater harvesting project at the Gram Panchayat building in Chudeli (under Rama Janpad Panchayat) demonstrates how modest initiatives can drive long-term change. Constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 31,000 using 15th Finance Commission funds, this rooftop system helps conserve rainwater and recharge groundwater levels, while also serving as a model for other villages.
Launched on October 2, 2024, the system collects rainwater from the Panchayat building's roof and channels it through a filter chamber before it enters the ground. This not only prevents the wastage of precious rainwater but also mitigates waterlogging around the building and aids in improving groundwater levels.
Project's success sparks interest among local residents
The project's success has sparked interest among local residents, many of whom are now considering installing similar rainwater harvesting systems in their own homes. The initiative has also raised awareness within the community about the importance of water conservation.
Under the Madhya Pradesh government's 'Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan' (Water-River Conservation Campaign), the Chudeli model illustrates how affordable, community-led solutions can play a pivotal role in ensuring water security, protecting the environment, and inspiring people to take an active part in conserving this vital resource.
