Water Hero Neeraj Wankhede’s Green Mission in Forests of Pandhurna in Madhya Pradesh: How Seeds of Hope Will Transform Both Environment and Local Community?
Pandhurna: What looks like a mere handful of soil today could transform into a forest tomorrow. Driven by this vision, renowned 'Water Hero' and 'Jal Prahari' Neeraj Wankhede has launched an inspiring campaign to boost greenery in the Mohi-Mandvi forests of Pandhurna.
In collaboration with the Forest Department, he and a group of volunteers scattered 20,000 seed balls recently. This marked the first phase of a larger initiative involving a total of 55,000 seed balls prepared ahead of the monsoon season.
The majority of the seed balls—approximately 50,000—contain custard apple seeds. Wankhede believes these trees will not only serve as a natural food source for birds and wildlife but also provide an additional source of income for tribal and economically disadvantaged families in the years to come.
He stated, "A seed ball is far more than just a seed; it is a promise to future generations of lush forests, improved water conservation, and robust rural livelihoods."

Speaking on the occasion, SDO (Forest) Chanchal Panwar (IFS) explained how seed balls facilitate the natural regeneration of forests during the rainy season, thereby enhancing biodiversity, soil health, and ecological balance. Range Officer Prabhuram Muchhala noted that the seeds sown today could grow into trees that provide shelter and sustenance to wildlife for decades.
Forest Department officials, members of the Village Forest Committee, environmental volunteers, and local residents participated in the campaign with great enthusiasm. The event concluded with a resolve to involve more people in the task of preparing and scattering seed balls throughout the monsoon season. This proved that meaningful changes in the environment often begin with just a small action.
