Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party (SP) has launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government over the alleged forcible removal of environmental activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk from his hunger strike site in Delhi. Terming this a violation of democratic rights, the party stated that attempts are being made to weaken democracy in the country.

A statement issued by the SP described the forcible removal of Sonam Wangchuk—who was fasting to press for his demands—as deeply shameful and concerning. Labeling the incident a "black day" for democracy, the party alleged that the BJP government is working to suppress voices of dissent.

The SP remarked that the central government's style of functioning runs counter to democratic values and is steering the country towards dictatorship. According to the party, instead of accepting criticism and dissent, the government is adopting a repressive attitude. The statement also accused the BJP of emulating the British style of governance. The SP asserted that peaceful protest and hunger strikes are constitutional rights of citizens in a democratic system and must be respected.

The party claimed that the people of the country are observing the government's conduct and will respond democratically; the public will pass judgment on the government's performance through their voting rights. SP Dimple Yadav stated that the forcible removal of Sonam Wangchuk is not merely an administrative action but an act of trampling upon democracy and the Constitution. She added that the BJP government can no longer tolerate even peaceful protest—this is dictatorship.

It is noteworthy that on Saturday morning, the Delhi Police removed Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar and admitted him to Safdarjung Hospital, citing concerns over his deteriorating health. In a statement, the police said this action was taken in compliance with a Delhi High Court order. The police have appealed to the protesters to vacate Jantar Mantar.

Dipke Begins Indefinite Hunger Strike

Meanwhile, Abhijeet Dipke, the founding president of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), decided to embark on a hunger strike.

Announcing this on the social media platform X, Dipke wrote, "I am starting an indefinite hunger strike right now. I request everyone not to back down. This movement is set to grow even larger. They made a huge mistake by removing Wangchuk Sir. I urge everyone to come to Jantar Mantar; our movement will move forward from here."

Earlier, confirming the hunger strike, the CJP founder wrote that the Parliament march scheduled for July 20 would take place exactly as planned.
