How ‘Nipun’ Will Enhance Navy’s Deep-Sea Capabilities; Submarine Rescue Capability to Get a Major Boost
The Indian Navy will induct ‘Nipun’ into its fleet at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on August 31, 2026. This is the second Nistar-class Diving Support Vessel (DSV), designed to significantly strengthen the Navy's capabilities in deep-sea diving, underwater intervention, and submarine rescue. Its deployment will further enhance the Navy's capacity to execute complex underwater operations.
A State-of-the-Art Platform for Deep-Sea Operations
‘Nipun’ has been specifically designed for a wide range of diving and underwater operations. It is equipped with modern diving systems, underwater intervention equipment, and facilities to support divers during prolonged operations at sea. The vessel is capable of providing sustained support for critical missions, even in challenging maritime conditions.
One of its most vital capabilities is assisting in submarine rescue operations. In the event of a submarine distress situation, ‘Nipun’ can effectively support divers, rescue teams, and the deployment of necessary technical equipment at sea. This will add a new dimension to the Navy's underwater rescue capabilities.
A Major Achievement in Indigenous Shipbuilding
‘Nipun’ has been indigenously constructed by Visakhapatnam-based Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL). The vessel was handed over to the Indian Navy on July 30, 2026, following extensive trials and the installation of equipment.

Equipped with modern navigation, platform management, and precise station-keeping systems, ‘Nipun’ will serve as an integrated platform for underwater missions. Its deployment will boost the Navy's special operations capability in India's areas of maritime interest.
