Is Rising AI Costs A New Challenge for Companies? Is AI technology now driving up corporate expenditure?

Companies view Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an effective tool to streamline operations and boost employee productivity. However, the increasing adoption of AI has turned its associated costs into a concern for the corporate world.

According to a recent report by the Ramp AI Index, the top 1% of US companies are spending an average of $7,400 (approximately Rs 7 lakh) per employee on AI tools. This implies that AI—once seen as a means to reduce costs—is now becoming a significant new expense for many companies.

AI Spending Triples in a Few Months

The report indicates that in January, top companies were spending around $2,590 (approximately Rs 2.47 lakh) per employee on AI. Within just a few months, this figure surged to $7,400. However, not every company incurs such high AI costs.

Among the top 10% of companies, AI spending stands at approximately $650 (Rs 62,000) per employee, whereas the average expenditure across all companies is reported to be only $11.95 (around Rs 1,140). This clearly shows that the companies utilizing AI the most are currently footing the largest bills.

Token-Based Billing Adds to the Burden

A major factor driving up AI costs is the "per-token billing model." AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic charge fees based on the number of tokens consumed. Simply put, the more extensive the tasks employees assign to AI, the higher the company's bill can climb.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said that this has become something of a meme, with companies complaining that their entire annual AI budget is exhausted within the first quarter alone. Meanwhile, Nvidia executive Bryan Catanzaro admitted in April that his team's computing costs had surpassed their employee salary expenses.

Uber, Amazon, and Walmart Move to Curb AI Usage

In light of rising costs, major companies like Uber, Amazon, and Walmart have begun regulating their AI usage. Setting token limits for employees aims to curb unnecessary AI consumption and keep escalating bills in check.

This shift indicates that companies are moving away from providing unrestricted access to AI and are now actively tracking usage and associated costs.

Anthropic Leads the Way; OpenAI Ranks Second

According to reports, approximately 43.5% of businesses in the US utilize Anthropic, while OpenAI holds a 39.7% share. Meanwhile, SpaceX AI accounts for a share of around 4%.

Simultaneously, companies with heavy AI usage are rapidly shifting toward more affordable open-source models; the market share of these models rose to 6.1% in July.

Consequently, the question facing companies in the future will not merely be whether to adopt AI, but rather which AI model offers the best results at the most cost-effective price.
