MP: Heritage train runs again from Patalpani to Kalakund amidst monsoon drizzle; travelers enjoy a memorable journey amidst lush hills, waterfalls, and valleys
The delightful journey of the Patalpani-Kalakund heritage train—one of the country's oldest and most scenic heritage rail routes—resumed on Saturday. While there was enthusiasm among passengers for this train, which runs through the lush greenery of the monsoon and the mountains, the turnout on the first day was lower than expected. Since the decision to operate the train was made just a day in advance, passengers had little time to learn about it or make bookings.
Railway officials anticipate that a large number of tourists will flock to this heritage train in the coming days to enjoy the weather. For now, the train will operate during the monsoon and winter seasons, subject to passenger demand.
Journey Begins at Mhow; First Stop at Patalpani
Online booking for the train also commenced on Saturday. However, many passengers arrived directly at Mhow station and boarded the train after purchasing tickets on the spot. The train began its journey from Mhow at around 11:00 AM. Excitement was palpable among the passengers as the train departed, with cameras and mobile phones busy capturing the stunning scenery.
The first stop of the journey was the Patalpani waterfall. The train halted here briefly, allowing passengers to have a snack and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty. Afterward, the train proceeded towards the heritage bridge. Throughout the journey, an onboard guide provided passengers with information about the heritage track, railway history, and key landmarks along the route.
Experiencing Nature at a Speed of 10 km/h
A distinctive feature of the heritage train is its slow pace. Moving through the mountain pass at approximately 10 kilometers per hour, the train offers passengers ample opportunity to observe nature up close. Waterfalls, a river, undulating mountains, and lush green valleys—enhanced by the rain—were the highlights that captivated the passengers. Afterward, the train reached the Kalakund trek. Upon arrival, passengers not only enjoyed the scenic beauty but also savored local delicacies.
Anticipation in Kalakund: Villagers Hope for Employment
The villagers of Kalakund had also been eagerly awaiting the resumption of the heritage train. The train's operations bring a large number of tourists to Kalakund, thereby boosting local business. Tourists enjoy tasting the area's famous Kalakand (a milk-based sweet) and Dal-Bafla.
The train's operation provides employment to local shopkeepers, food vendors, and other small business owners. For this reason, the train is not merely a means of tourism for the villagers of Kalakund but also a source of livelihood and income.
Although the passenger turnout was low on the first day, the train is expected to gain popularity in the coming days as the monsoon season enhances the allure of the mountains and waterfalls.
Train will operate three days a week
The train will operate three days a week—on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. During the journey, passengers will be able to enjoy a heritage ride from Patalpani to Kalakund amidst the picturesque natural landscapes of the Malwa region.
According to Mukesh Kumar, Public Relations Officer for the Ratlam Division of Western Railway, the Patalpani-Kalakund Heritage Train (Train No. 52965) will depart from Patalpani at 11:05 AM and arrive at Kalakund at 1:05 PM.
