The story of how people and tigers have learned to coexist in Madhya Pradesh's Panna Tiger Reserve is set to make its mark on the international stage. A documentary titled "Neighbours of the Beast," which beautifully portrays this unique relationship, has been selected for the prestigious Flickers' Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) 2026 in the United States.
The festival being organized in Providence, Rhode Island, from August 4 to 9 is considered one of the most respected film festivals in the world. This year, out of more than 7,000 entries from over 110 countries, only 20 films were selected for the finals, making the documentary's selection a significant achievement.
Rather than focusing solely on wildlife, the film tells the story of the people whose lives are intertwined with the forests of Panna. Centered on Madla village, the film highlights the experiences of safari guides and members of the Gond and Pardhi communities, showing how the return of tigers has transformed the region. Tourism has created new opportunities, while the local community has become an active participant in conserving these big cats and their habitat.
The documentary is directed by independent filmmaker Sarthak Verma, whose work brings to light lesser-known cultural and tribal stories from India. Produced in collaboration with executive producer Raghavendra Singh Chauhan and a skilled creative team, the film presents Panna's conservation journey in a deeply intimate and authentic manner.
Its selection for RIIFF marks a significant milestone not only for the filmmakers but also serves as a moment of pride for Madhya Pradesh. This documentary will showcase the state's rich biodiversity, tribal heritage, and successful wildlife conservation model to audiences worldwide, demonstrating that when people and nature flourish together, both grow stronger.
