Indore: Dragon fruit, which once reached Indian markets via imports, has now established itself in the soil of the Malwa region. Its cultivation is becoming visible in the fields surrounding Indore. Following Gujarat and the Saurashtra-Kutch regions, farmers in the Ratlam, Manpur, Sanawad, and Badnawar areas of Madhya Pradesh are now planting it. Thanks to favorable weather conditions, this exotic fruit is emerging as a viable option for local farmers.

Originally associated with Vietnam, dragon fruit is now grown on a large scale in several tropical countries, including Vietnam, Thailand, China, and India. In India, it is also known as 'Kamalam'. Cultivation began in Kerala and gradually expanded to other states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh.

Plants of this fruit—which once arrived in markets from abroad—are now making their mark on Malwa's soil. From cultivation to the market and health benefits, the journey of dragon fruit is shifting from an exotic import to a local favorite.

Fruit comes in four colors, with distinct flavors

A fruit trader in Indore explains that various varieties of dragon fruit are available in the market. It is primarily found in white, yellow, and red colors, though other color varieties are also seen. The golden-colored variety is relatively rare in the market.

The taste varies according to the color and variety; the white variety has a mild taste, the red is relatively sweeter, and the yellow variety offers a sweet-and-sour flavor.

Market prices fluctuate based on quality and availability. Currently, the wholesale price ranges from approximately Rs 50 to 80 per kilogram, while it sells for Rs 150 to 200 per kilogram in the retail market.

Flowers Bloom at Night

The dragon fruit is a plant belonging to the cactus family, and a distinctive feature of its cultivation is its flowers. These flowers typically bloom at night; they open after sunset and begin to wither before sunrise. Pollination and fruit formation occur during this period.

Yellow and red varieties grow rapidly

A farmer Ajeet explained that there are many varieties of dragon fruit; the yellow and red ones are particularly delicious and grow vigorously, with individual fruits weighing up to 700–800 grams. It yields a good harvest in India when weather conditions are favorable. Ajeet mentioned that he began this cultivation after watching videos on YouTube, and it is proving to be a profitable venture.

Dietitian Says: Rich in Fiber and Antioxidants

According to dietitians, dragon fruit contains significant amounts of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. Fiber helps maintain a healthy digestive system and alleviates constipation. The antioxidants present in the fruit help protect the body against oxidative stress. The Vitamin C and antioxidants it contains help boost immunity. Since fiber creates a feeling of fullness for a longer period, the fruit can aid in weight management when included in a balanced diet. Additionally, the healthy fats found in dragon fruit seeds contribute to the nutritional quality of the diet.

Excessive Consumption Can Cause Issues

Doctors advise that any fruit should be consumed in moderation. Excessive consumption of dragon fruit can lead to digestive problems or diarrhea in some people. Generally, a serving of about 100 to 200 grams at a time is sufficient, though individual needs depend on age, health, and overall diet. One should not overconsume a fruit simply because it is labeled a "superfood." Kidney patients should consume potassium-rich fruits, including dragon fruit, based on the advice of a doctor or dietitian.
