Asian Games 2026: By winning the silver medal in the women's 49kg category on Wednesday, Mirabai Chanu ended India's 28-year wait for an Asian Games medal in weightlifting. This marks her first-ever Asian Games medal.
The 32-year-old weightlifter secured second place with a combined lift of 198kg. She successfully lifted 87kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk. Her performance evoked memories of Karnam Malleswari's silver medal win in 1998—the last time India had won a weightlifting medal at the Asian Games.
Chanu has already established herself as one of India's premier weightlifters by winning medals at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and World Championships. This Asian Games medal adds another significant achievement to her career.
Meanwhile, there was also good news for India in women's Wushu. Roshibina Devi reached the final of the 60kg category, keeping her medal hopes alive.
Chanu's silver medal marks another memorable moment for Indian weightlifting and further strengthens the country's medal campaign at the Asian Games.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today congratulated Mirabai Chanu on winning a Silver medal in the Women’s 49 kg Weightlifting event.
